1 Nephi, chapter 12, from modern Hebrew, through ASL, into modern English:

So then the angel said to me,
“Look!  Look, and see your posterity
and the posterity of your brothers.”

I looked, and I saw the promised land,
that place already appointed to us.

I saw there the mass of people,
even their vulgar and common culture,
and that they were not living as a set apart people.
I saw there were as many of them as the sand of the sea.

I saw these vulgar people gathering themselves
to prepare for war against each other.
I saw wars and rumors of wars,
and even wars caused by rumors,
and many cold-hearted killings
by the cold steal of weapons
amongst people already divided by dissension.

I saw many generations pass in war
and because of the wars,
with many people dying
because of the strife,
contention,
feuds,
quarrels,
and conflicts in the land.

I also saw so many cities
involved in these conflicts
that I could not even count them.

And then I saw
a murky haze of a dark mist
settle over our promised land
and the people who lived there.

That is to also say,
a dark fog veiled the way
to our celestial destination.

That is to also say,
the people were not walking
in the way appointed to them.

I saw lightning and heart thunder;
that is to also say,
I saw prophets and heard their voices
warning the people,
and the earth shook at what they had to say.

Even evil shuddered
against monuments built in the ground;
that is to also say,
evil shuddered against temples built in the land.

Yes, I saw the earth torn,
with rocks and boulders thrown to the ground
like little child-stones.

That is to also say,
I saw a people fallen in pride,
suddenly nothing when they should have known better.

I saw mountains collapse
in on themselves.

That is to also say,
I saw governments fail
and cultural icons shamed.

I saw that fields were broken up.

That is to also say,
I saw political boundaries
change like geography,
and economies collapse.

I saw cities sunk;
that is to also say
I saw families failing
because of spiritual degeneration.

I saw many cities burned with fire;
that is to also say many endured much
to be refined and purified.

I saw many cities fall
because of the quaking;
or, that is also to say
that I saw many families fail
because they were afraid
and not acting in faith.

After I saw and understood all these things,
I took time to ponder them.
Only then I understood
that I was able to see these things
because the mantle of darkness
had gone from over the land
(or, that the veil was removed from my eyes
in exchange for clear-seeing and full-knowing).

And I saw the many, many people
who did listen
and who did do
as the Lord, our Master,
commanded.
Because of this obedience,
which was a token of their faith,
their families had not fallen in fear.
That is to also say,
they had not been condemned
at the judgement
by the Lord, our Master,
because they had offered
covenant tokens
validated by their lives of faith.

Then as I pondered further,
and sought to understand more,
another visioned opened to me.
I saw the heavens open like the sky,
and I saw the Lamb of God
descending out of a higher heaven.

He descended
to show Himself to them,
those who were covenant-keepers,
that they might re-discover Him
and so also remember Him.

Yes, I testify and record here
that I also saw
the Holy Spirit come down
as a companion upon twelve (ten plus two) others,
and God the Father chose them
(upon a mount, in a temple)
and relied upon them.

And the angel said to me,
“These twelve (ten plus two) are disciples of the Lamb,
selected to judge your posterity.”

And the angel said to me,
“Do you remember these (the ten plus two)?
You knew them before (pre-mortally).
They are the twelve (ten plus two)
apostles of the Lamb.

“Do you understand
that the children of Abraham
will be judged by these twelve?
They will judge the house of Israel (the ten)
[the northern kingdom of Israel]
and gather her ten tribes
to unite them again with the Jews (the two)
[the southern kingdom of Judah].
These twelve tribes
will be judged by these twelve apostles,
who care for the House of Israel
like a beloved daughter.

“In this way,
these twelve (ten plus two),
will serve even your posterity
as they gather
the ten tribes of Israel,
even your posterity,
(by) serving as messengers
from the Lamb
to you
and to your posterity.

“And see, they (the twelve)
are Righteous Ones
and their service correct before God
due to their faith in the Lamb of God.
Because of this faithful service,
their garments are made white in His blood.

“That is to also say
that they are saved by the atonement
of the Lamb of God
because they do keep their covenants
to testify of the atonement,
just as the Lamb kept His covenant
to complete the work of it.”

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.

And the angel said to me, “Look!”
I looked, and I saw three generations
be born and live their lives,
with lives lived honestly and righteously,
so that their garments were white
like those of the Lamb of God.
That is to also say,
these generations also kept their covenants.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.

And the angel said to me,
“These generations are made whole
(complete and perfect and peaceful)
in the blood of the Lamb
due to their faith in Him
(as evidenced by covenants kept).”

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.

And I, Nephi, also saw many of the fourth generation
crying out to God the Father
in the name of the Lamb
and keeping their covenants
so that
after they died,
they moved on
in progression
with the righteous ones.

And so, in this way
(by messengers and temple ordinances),
I saw the peoples
of lands
and generations
gathered together
with the Lamb.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.

And the angel said to me,
“See?  Do you see your posterity?
And the posterity of your brothers?”

And so I looked, and I saw
my descendants gathered in droves
against the descendants of my brothers,
who were already clustered for battle.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.

And the angel said to me,
“See?  Do you see
the dirty fountain from which
the murky water comes?
That’s the river your father saw
when he said it was
as deep as the valleys of hell.
That’s how the people are
more and more trapped
each time they return to their sin.

“And the mists of the darkness
are the temptations of the devil,
which taxes the eyes [of God],
wearing [on the people]
until they are blind,
and thumps on the heart [of God]
until the hearts [of the people] are hard,
and spreads amongst them
through one’s lack of testimony
to another without testimony,
through all the children of a generation,
leading them on tangents
until they have forgotten their way
and cannot remember it
because their faith is extinguished
and thus their way is lost.

“Remember that great and spacious building
that your father saw?
Those buildings are the false delusions
that rise in the once innocent children of a generation
until they grow in pride
(instead of waxing strong in faith).

“Do you see, now, that great gulf
between the children of men
and the children of God?
It is a horror to cross,
even impossible.
This gulf is the state of those
facing the justice
of a timeless and eternal God.
It would forever be impossible,
except for the promised Messiah,
even the very Lamb of God.
The Holy Spirit testifies of Him
from the beginning of the world
until even today,
and forever more.”

When the angel said these things,
I pondered further, and
I sought to understand more.

I looked, and I saw
my descendants fighting
against the descendants of my brothers,
as the angel had said.

Then as I pondered further,
I understood that this – in part –
was due to my own boldness against my brothers
passed down to my children but taken out of context by them,
just as rebellion was passed down from my brothers,
and because of the temptation of the devil.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.
And I saw that the descendants of my brothers
overpowered my own descendants.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.

Then I looked, again asking for more,
and I saw that the descendants of my brother
overpowered my own descendants,
and spread across the face of the land.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.
And then I saw my brother’s descendants
gather themselves together in purpose.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.
And when I looked again,
I saw that purpose was for war,
and that the people talked of war.
I watched as many generations
died in these wars,
losing both their living and their lives
to these wars.

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.
And the angel said to me,
“See?  Do you see how
the people atrophied
when their faith wasted away?
They became a decadent
and degenerate people
without faith.”

Then as I pondered further,
I sought to understand more.
And indeed, I looked and I saw
the people waste away
as their faith atrophied,
creating a darkness over them
until their lives were full
of corruption
and dirty economics
and filthy treatment of each other
by overindulgence
at the expense of others
and by violence
and by stealing
and by lying
and by relationships outside the Order of God.
This was the greatest abomination
because they could have been
a holy people of God,
even the House of the Lord,
their offering being Holiness to the Lord.

About Emily

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 2009. I serve as a Chaplain, and work as a counselor. I got bilateral cochlear implants in 2010, but will always love sign language. I choose books over television, and organics over processed. Nothing is as close to flying as ballroom dancing - except maybe running, when in the solo mood. I would rather be outside than anywhere else, especially at the river riding my bike or kayaking. PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy, and currently doing a post-doc in Jewish Studies and an MDiv in Pastoral Counseling. The best thing about Emily World is that it's always an adventure, even if (not so) grammatically precise. The only thing better than writing is being married to a writer. Nathan Christensen and I were married in the Oklahoma City temple on 13 October 2012, and have since fostered more than eighty-five children. We have adopted the six who stayed, and are totally and completely and helplessly in love with our family. Nathan writes musical theater, including "Broadcast" (a musical history of the radio) and an adaption of Lois Lowry's "The Giver". He served his mission in South Korea, has taught song-writing in New York City public schools, and worked as a theater critic for a Tucson newspaper. This is not an official Web site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
