3 Nephi 11

After this darkness had settled, and after the earth had calmed, the people were gathered together near the Temple (verse 1).  They were “marveling and wondering one with another” about all that had happened, and discussing how these things were the promised sign that the Savior had died as the prophets said would happen (verse 2).

And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn (verse 3).

They did not understand what was said when the voice spoke again, and were overwhelmed by the feeling of it (verse 4), but on the third time they “did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it” (verse 5) so that they understood (verse 6).  And the voice said to them (verse 7):

Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name – hear ye him.

The people heard this, and understood it, and looked to heaven (verse 8):

… and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him…

He stretched out his hand to the people (verse 9), and said (verses 10-11):

Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.  And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.

When the people heard these words, and knew them to be true, and knew Him to be Jesus, the Savior, the Man (of Holiness, that’s why it is capitalized, see 1 Nephi 15)… when the people knew the words of the prophets were being fulfilled, they remembered also that “it had been prophesied among them that Christ would show himself unto them after his ascension into heaven” (verse 12).

This is the moment that the Savior does appear to the “other sheep” from John 10:16.

He spoke to them (verse 13), saying that each of them could (verse 14):

Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrustyour hands into my side, and also that ye may  feelthe prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the Godof Israel, and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world.

And so the people came forth to Him, to feel Him and touch Him, each of them one at a time, to “see with their eyes and feel with their hands” so that each of them “did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come” (verse 15).  When all of them had witnessed Him for themselves, they cried out together (verse 16), saying (verse 17):

Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God!

“And they did fall down at the feet of Jesus, and did worship Him” (verse 17).

The Savior called for Nephi, the prophet and leader of the people (verse 18), and Nephi went to Him and bowed and kissed His feet (verse 19).  The Savior told Nephi to arise (verse 20), and gave Nephi the power and authority to baptize the people (verse 21).  He called disciples and apostles also, giving them the power and authority to baptize (verse 22).  He taught them, saying (verse 23):

Verily I say unto you, that whoso repenteth of his sins through your words, and desireth to be baptized in my name, on this wise shall ye baptize them – Behold, ye shall go down and stand in the water, and in my name shall ye baptize them.

He gave them also the words (verse 24) to say at baptism (verse 25):

Having authority given me of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

They were instructed to baptize by immersion (verse 26), and that it should always be done the same way so that we do things according to the will of the Father just as He does the will of our Father (verse 27).  We should not argue about this or change it, or fuss about doctrine (verse 28), because “the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another” (verse 29).   This is not of me, the Savior said.  Stirring up people to anger, and stirring up people against each other – this is not my doctrine, the Savior said (verse 30).

His doctrine, he says (verse 31), is that we all should repent and believe in Him (verse 32).

And whoso believeth in me, and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God (verse 33).

And whoso believeth not in me, and is not baptized, shall be damned (verse 34).

This is the testimony of the Savior, that this is true, and this is the confirmation from the Spirit that we feel it and so know it to be true (verse 35).  It is true because this is the plan of the Father, providing a way that we may choose our rescue.  But we must choose to let Him rescue us, and the way to be rescued is to do things His way.  We feel it when the Holy Ghost tells us what is true (verse 36).

And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and become as a little child, and be baptized in my name, or ye can in nowise receive these things (verse 38).

This is the starting place, and all of our line-upon-line’s build upon it (verse 39).

This is what makes us strong and whole, perfected in Him, by the simple ways of doing it His way (verse 40).  These are the simple things we should testify of, will testify of if we truly believe that they are true (verse 41).
