If we have a testimony of the Savior, then we will also have a testimony of the work done by His servants. We know His servants by the work they do and the choices they make, for “there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity” (verse 1).
The people were now paying attention to the words of the prophets, and looking specifically for the sign that Samuel the Lamanite had promised: “that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land” (verse 3). Many doubted, despite other signs already fulfilled (verse 4).
But a great storm did come (verse 5), and lasted three hours (verse 19). There were also earthquakes (verse 6) so strong that some cities fell into the earth (verse 9) while others became high on new mountains (verse 10). Lightning came (verse 7) and set the cities on fire (verse 8). The whole land was changed from how they knew it (verses 12, 17-18), with highways broken up and roads destroyed (verse 13). Many cities sunk, were burned, or shaken by the earthquakes until nothing was left (verse 14), and the remaining cities had a great deal of damage (verse 15).
The earth was physically responding to the death of its Creator (Moses 7:46-56).
When the storm was finished, there was nothing left but darkness (verse 20). There were no candles or fire (verse 21), and the people could not see the sun or the moon or the stars (verse 22). For three days there was no light at all, and the people mourned (verse 23). They mourned the destruction of their cities, they mourned the light missing from their day, and they mourned their lack of repentance while they had still had time (verses 24-25).
Prophets have spoken again, as they always have.
Since the people have ignored these testimonies, now the earth testifies to us again, groaning under its bondage from sin and iniquity (D&C 84:49,53).
Now is the time to respond to the testimony of the prophets, and to the testimony that the Earth herself offers after our testimony has been given. Now is the time to prepare to meet our Savior, who is coming as promised, that all things might be fulfilled.
